#2 - In the Wild: Capturing Nature's Unscripted Moments
Share
Animals are an essential part of the environment wherever we travel to. They embody the essence of Mother Nature that surrounds us. They help me have a more complete vision of a place: what lives in it, what represents it, what moves it. Capturing wildlife in its natural habitat is a big part of what draws me to travel around the world.
Embarking into nature with hope and anticipation, I understand that encountering wildlife is a matter of luck. These beings, true to their nature, may grace us with their presence or not. It's a humbling reminder of our lack of control over the wild and the importance of always being conscious of the potential dangers. Dangers towards your own safety, and also towards the animals themselves.
The art of wildlife photography demands a delicate balance; becoming invisible within the environment to observe animals without causing disturbance. Each species requires a tailored approach, from mastering camouflage techniques to employing specific photography skills suited to the situation. Bird photography, for example, necessitates a profound understanding of avian behavior, requiring readiness to capture fleeting moments through patience and precise camera settings.
These attemps to document wildlife stories foster a deeper connection between humans and other life forms, promoting respect and coexistence. I will always remember the day I was walking in Shark Valley, part of the Everglades National Park, where wildlife is abundant. As I stopped to read a sign about the surrounding nature, I suddenly realised that some people were trying to grab my attention from a certain distance: ”lady, lady…look behind you“. As I turned around, a huge alligator was standing still right behind me. I quickly realised that I was standing in his “route”. As I took a step to the side, he just kept going onto his path. This encounter was a stark reminder to always remain vigilant and respectful of the natural world around us.
Through these experiences, wildlife photography becomes more than just taking pictures; it's an exploration of the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature, a journey filled with surprises, learning, and profound appreciation for the world's beauty.
